The Oklahoma Sooners headed down to Cow Town for a matchup with undefeated Texas Christian last Saturday and they looked to bounce back after a tough loss to Kansas State. The Horned Frogs had other plans.
Oklahoma started with the ball but turned the ball over on a Marvin Mims fumble and that set up TCU for the score. It took the Sooner offense 6 drives to finally find the endzone and amassed ten total points in the first quarter. Dillon Gabriel went out with an injury in the 2nd quarter after a late hit from a Horned Frog defender. He would be out for the remainder of the game and the Oklahoma offense struggled the rest of the afternoon. The highlight for the Sooners came from freshman running back Jovantae Barnes who rushed for a total of 101 yards and 2 scores which made him the third Sooner to rush for over 100 yards and multiple scores in a game this season. That is according to SoonerSports.com.
The defense had their second straight rough outing. In the first quarter alone, the TCU offense scored 27 points and racked up a total of 479 yards in the first half. That offensive performance gave the Sooners back-to-back losses for the first time since 1999 and their first loss to the Horned Frogs in nine games. TCU ended up with 668 total yards of offense and 55 points. They will play Kansas next weekend as two Big 12 undefeated foes face off in Lawrence, KS at 11 a.m. on FS1.
Duggan started hot with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Savion Williams and then later in the first quarter he outran the defense for a 67-yard scamper and score to go up 21-3. He would finish with 402 yards total offense and 5 total touchdowns.
David Ugwoegbu led the way defensively totaling 10 tackles. Danny Stutsman and Trey Morrison combined for a sack. This is the 2nd straight game the defense failed to create a turnover after causing at least one turnover in the first three games.
The Sooners will attempt to put this one behind them as they head for a meeting with Texas in the Red River Shootout. That game, as usual, will begin at 11 a.m. on ABC.
I will have more on the Texas game coming up this week. I might even record a pregame segment on my YouTube.
