Head Coach Chet Pobolish is an Amazing Coach, and an Even Better Mentor

The SWOSU football team has an amazing chance to head to the post season this year, first time in four years. And that is certainly the goal of the team, but for head coach Chet Pobolish, it isn’t his only goal.

“It is all about us. We try and get better every single day, and only worry about us.”

This is something Pobolish harps on often, whether it be in the weight room, meeting room, film room, or practice field. When he took over last fall, the team didn’t have success right off the bat and went 3-8, but it wasn’t the sad and desperate 3-8 you might’ve thought. No, it was a very promising 3-8 and the beginning of this season has proven that. Before a loss to Arkansas-Monticello, the Bulldogs were 2-0, it had been 6 years since that had happened.

The defense was playing lights out as they led the nation in turnover margin with +7. Even though they did suffer that loss, everyone knew that this would not be a regular occurrence. The offense couldn’t seem to get things going against the Bolweevils of Arkansas-Monticello, but the defense did their part taking the ball away twice. There was just a feeling that Pobolish would have this team prepared for last week’s game against Ouachita.

Along with Pobolish being an amazing head coach, he is also a great mentor. I know personally I have had several conversations with him and he has always been honest and given me great advice. Like when deciding not to play football anymore, he told me first that he was proud of me, that he would continue to be someone I could go to with anything I had, and he had even recommended me for a broadcasting job to keep me involved with the team. Pobolish is not only a coach of football, but a coach for life. See, football and life have a lot in common, and that is another story for another day, but he is not only making his players better players, also better men. He tells his team he wants them to become great men, great husbands, and great fathers; and his goal is to help push his team to that status.

I know Pobolish is the right man for this team, this school, and this community. So, don’t be to surprised when the Dawgs are back to their winning ways.
