The Elgin Owls have completely exceeded expectations this season. The Owls have started 5-0 and 2-0 in district play their first year at the 5A level. They have beaten both their district opponents by more than 35 points. Beating El Reno 47-8 and then Ardmore last week 35-0. That is their second shutout this season. They also denied their rival, the Cache Bulldogs, 27-0.
“We have the expectation of making the playoffs. We have controlled our destiny up to this point, and we must continue to do that week to week.” – Head Coach Chalmer Wyatt
This defense hasn’t allowed more than 14 points in a game and with pitching two shutouts, they are averaging a very impressive 6.4 points allowed. Yes folks, 6.4 points. That is best in the district with MacArthur in second at 23.8 points allowed per game.
Head coach of the Owls, Chalmer Wyatt, says he is most impressed with his defense’s attitude.
“They have done a great job of learning their assignments and playing aggressively.” – Head Coach Chalmer Wyatt
His offense isn’t bad either as Elgin is averaging 36.6 points a game. That is 3rd best in the district behind 5A powerhouses MacArthur and Noble. The Owls nearly put 50 points against El Reno in their first ever 5A district game. Sophomore quarterback, Tres Lorah, threw for 150 yards and 3 scores in the first half. The Elgin run game, even with their starting running back, Matt Lund, out, was able to have a productive night. Freshman Ritson Meyer rushed for 2 scores and led the way for the ground game to rack 252 yards.
The Owls will head west to face the winless Altus Bulldogs. This could be a tricky game as you have a team that is riding an unexpected high facing a team that has nothing to lose. Altus runs the triple option. That type of offense can be hard to defend if you aren’t defensively sound. Wyatt wants to see his team stay disciplined. He wants them to take what they worked on in practice and carry it out on Friday night.
If the Owls can continue their run, they will be 6-0 and remain at the top of the district. After the Altus game, they head to Noble and face another high-octane offense. The rest of the season doesn’t let up either as MacArthur and Midwest City loom on down the line.
The Elgin Owls kickoff against Altus at 7:00 pm on The Oklahoma Sports Network.
